The Villa Holiday Guide: How to Choose and Book the Right Villa
Everything first-time and seasoned villa travellers should know — from picking the right region and pool type to the best months on the Turquoise Coast.
A villa holiday is a different rhythm from a hotel stay: breakfast in your own time, a private pool nobody else is queuing for, and evenings that end on your own terrace rather than in a lift lobby. This guide covers the decisions that actually matter when planning a private villa holiday on Turkey's Turquoise Coast — where to base yourself, what to look for in the villa itself, and when to travel.
Why choose a villa over a hotel?
Space and privacy are the obvious wins: a whole house, your own private pool, and no shared corridors. For families and groups the practical wins are just as big — a kitchen for early breakfasts and late suppers, laundry for long stays, and bedrooms spread over real floors so early sleepers and night owls coexist peacefully.
The less obvious win is the setting. Hotels cluster where hotels fit; villas sit in olive groves, on hillsides above the sea, and in quiet villages. Much of the Kalkan and Kaş coastline simply cannot be experienced from a hotel room.
Choosing the right region
Kalkan suits travellers who want restaurants and the harbour within reach and a sea view from the pool terrace — the town is famous for its rooftop dining. Kaş has a slightly more bohemian feel, with a lively old town and some of Turkey's best diving. İslamlar, a mountain village above Kalkan, trades walking distance for cooler air, valley views and real seclusion — a favourite for honeymooners and anyone escaping the July heat. Fethiye and Ölüdeniz offer the widest mix: the famous lagoon, paragliding and larger resort infrastructure.
Reading the villa: what actually matters
Look past the photo count and check the facts that shape the week:
- Bedrooms vs. beds — a "sleeps 8" villa with two real bedrooms and two sofa beds is a very different holiday from four proper bedrooms.
- Pool type — infinity pools are built for the view; sheltered (fully private) pools matter to guests who want total seclusion; a heated pool extends the season well into spring and autumn.
- Distance realism — "5 minutes to the beach" usually means by car on coastal hills. If you won't hire a car, choose a villa described as walkable to a centre.
- Outdoor living — shaded terraces, a BBQ and an outdoor dining table get used every single day; a gym almost never is.
When to travel
The villa season on the Turquoise Coast runs roughly May to October. May, June, September and October bring warm seas, softer light and easier restaurant tables; July and August bring peak heat, peak liveliness and peak demand — book those months early. In the shoulder months a heated pool is the difference between looking at the water and swimming in it.
Booking well
Before you commit, check the practical frame: minimum stay lengths (high season is often week-based), check-in and check-out times, what is included (linen, towels, mid-stay cleaning) and the cancellation terms. Ask questions before booking — a good villa company answers quickly and specifically, and that responsiveness is exactly what you will rely on during the stay itself. Booking direct with the local operator usually also means real local help: airport transfers, restaurant bookings, a plumber on a Sunday.
Settling in: small tips that improve the week
Do one big grocery run on day one and top up at local markets after. Plan pool-and-terrace days deliberately rather than treating them as gaps between excursions — they are usually the days everyone remembers. With small children, agree pool rules on arrival and check whether the villa offers fences or alarmed covers. And keep one evening free for nothing at all: dinner at the villa, the BBQ working, the sun going down behind the hills.
