The Best Beaches in and around Kalkan

Kalkan's own beach, known locally as Halk Plajı (the public beach), is a small pebble-and-shingle bay on the edge of town, an easy walk from the harbour. The water deepens quickly and stays beautifully clear, and the backdrop of white houses climbing the hillside is Kalkan at its most photogenic.

Just as characteristic are the swimming platforms and beach clubs built on the rocks around the bay. Instead of sand you get sun terraces with ladders dropping straight into deep, turquoise water — many regulars swear this is the best swimming in town. Because platforms line both sides of the bay, you can simply follow the coast path until one takes your fancy.

Wedged into the mouth of a gorge on the coast road between Kalkan and Kaş, about a 15-minute drive east of Kalkan, Kaputaş is the beach you have almost certainly seen in photographs: a small crescent of pale sand and fine pebbles framed by high cliffs, with water in shades of turquoise that look enhanced but are entirely real.

Access is down a long, steep staircase from the road — fine for most visitors, but worth bearing in mind in the midday heat or with very small children. The cove is compact and justly famous, so it fills up fast in high season. Go in the morning for the calmest, clearest water and the best chance of a good spot.

A short drive west of Kalkan, Patara is the region's great sandy showpiece: a ribbon of golden sand and dunes stretching for around 12 kilometres, one of the longest uninterrupted beaches in the Mediterranean. Even at the height of summer, a few minutes' walk brings you to a stretch that is all yours.

The beach adjoins the ruins of ancient Patara, once among the leading cities of the Lycian League, so a swim combines naturally with a wander past the theatre and colonnaded streets half-buried in sand. Patara is also a protected nesting ground for loggerhead turtles (Caretta caretta) — a big part of why it remains gloriously undeveloped — so keep clear of any marked nesting areas.

One thing to know: there is almost no natural shade at Patara, so go early, take an umbrella and plenty of water, and save midday for the ruins or a long lunch.

When you want a slower, more local day by the sea, head a few minutes west of Kalkan to Firnaz Bay, near the village of Yeşilköy. This wide, pebbly bay has calm, clear water and a fraction of the crowds of the famous names — the kind of place where a whole afternoon disappears into swimming, reading and one more swim. Sea shoes make getting in and out far more comfortable here.

About half an hour's drive east along one of Turkey's most scenic coast roads, the laid-back town of Kaş has its own family of swimming spots. Küçük Çakıl is a tiny pebble cove right below the town centre, while Büyük Çakıl, a little further along, is its larger, equally clear-watered sibling.

For something a touch more adventurous, hop on a water taxi from Kaş harbour to Limanağzı, a cluster of coves across the bay with no road access — the short boat ride is half the fun. On the Çukurbağ Peninsula just outside town, sheltered Hidayet Bay offers wonderfully calm water, ideal for long, lazy swims.

A few simple habits make beach-hopping on this coast much more enjoyable:

• Pack sea shoes. Most coves around Kalkan and Kaş are pebble or rock; only Patara is pure sand.
• Time it right. The season runs roughly from May to October, and the sea stays pleasantly warm well into autumn.
• Go early. Mornings mean calmer water, a cooler staircase at Kaputaş and easier parking everywhere; the small coves are busiest in the middle of the day.
• Bring your own shade. Especially at Patara, an umbrella, a hat and more water than you think you need are essential.
• Have a car if you can. Every beach in this guide is an easy, spectacular drive from Kalkan.
